CANONSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL ’ S MRS . KELLY BERG WINS EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Dr . Mary Jo Podgurski , director of the Washington Outreach , notified Seventh Grade English Teacher Mrs . Kelly Berg this summer that she had been honored with this award for advocating for and educating her students above and beyond throughout the pandemic . Mrs . Berg embraced the mission of the Academy for Adolescent Health Teen Outreach , which “ envisions a community in which young people are “ respected and able to enjoy mental and physical wellness ” according to its mission statement heathyteens . com .
Mrs . Berg says that her students should be honored as well for entering and winning several essay contests and positively impacting their community with their writing . Their winning essays were about black history , women ’ s history , and autism awareness and were published in the Observer-Reporter during this challenging and unprecedented past school year and the spring of 2020 .
The students who participated in and won essay contests through the Washington Teen Outreach have earned this recognition through writing for the purpose of connecting and communicating with their community this past year include the following soon-tobe Eighth Graders at Canonsburg Middle School :
• Elli Glass , Black History Month Essay Contest Winner ( 1st Place )
• Ella Branagan , Women ’ s History Month Essay Contest Winner ( 1st Place )
• Elli Glass , Hannah Krelic , and Riley Tapolci , Autism Awareness Essay Contest Winners
