Community Motors—
Nearly 70 Years
of Keeping Your
Car Running
I
n 1950, Joe Mastangioli and his wife,
Mary, and son, Joe Jr., opened
Community Motors as a new Mercury
dealership in the heart of Canonsburg. As
the family business grew, the number of
people involved in keeping the business
running grew as well.
Joe Jr., otherwise known as “Mercury
Joe” or “Community Joe,” took over sales
and general management with his mother
handling the office duties after his father
passed in 1958. In 1969 Joe Jr.’s wife,
Nancy, got involved in the business and
helped run day-to-day operations and
Parts and Service. During this time Joe and
Nancy had two children. One of them was
yet another Joe, and he took to mechanics
at a young age. He was working full time
in service and as a tech in his early 20s.
When Ford Motor Co. announced that the
Mercury brand would be eliminated, the
family carried on as an indepenent used
car dealer and service facility. In 2015, Joe
and Nancy retired. Joe’s son took the helm
with his wife, Sharon, and the company
still is helping motorists today as a third-
generation quality repair shop and service
facility.
“We ran the dealership up until the
point when Mercury stopped making cars
around 2010,” Joe said, “and then we sold
late-model used cars and serviced them
for about three years after that until my
parents retired. My wife and I decided
to concentrate on auto
repair and maintenance, so
we updated the dealership
building into a repair garage.
It’s still the same family, still
the same service that we’ve
always been known for.”
The only difference really is the number of
technicians working on-site. With four full-time
technicians who are always keeping up their
training with the most up-to-date practices
and technology in the field, Community
Motors has more expertise and diagnostic
machinery than most independent shops
can offer.
Virtually any service you can imagine,
from alignments, air conditioning repairs and
transmission or coolant flushes, to brake work,
inspections and emissions testing, Community
Motors can do it all at an affordable price.
“From an oil change to an entire engine
replacement, we can do it,” Sharon said. “We
service all foreign and domestic vehicles as
well as diesels.”
In addition to the advanced repair and
alignment services, Community Motors also
invested in a state-of-the-art OEM factory
scanning tool for not only getting better
diagnostic information from your vehicle, but
for reprogramming it as well.
“A generic scan tool can read codes, but
with ours, we have full OEM capability to flash
and reprogram every module in your vehicle,”
Joe said. “The computer in your car basically
runs your engine, so we can reflash to the latest
factory calibrations, or program new modules in
all foreign and domestic vehicles in order to keep
your car running as efficiently as possible. It’s
extremely expensive equipment that you’re not
likely going to find at most other repair shops.”
In addition to being a part of the community
for the last 70 years, Community Motors also
strongly believes in supporting the community
and has a history of donating to causes
benefiting Canonsburg and the Canon-McMillan
School District.
“We just recently made a donation to the
Canon-Mac Boys Volleyball team and make sure
we donate to anything school related when they
come around,” Sharon said. “Whether it’s a local
sports team or yearbook ads, we give.”
