TEENS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
A MESSAGE FROM BETH KAIRUSH, TEEN ADVIOSRY BOARD COORDINATOR
A message from Peggy Tseng, Library Director
The Teen Advisory Board( TAB) at the Frank Sarris Public Library has been keeping busy in 2017. The TAB is comprised of 19 students in grades 7- 12 who are interested in making a difference in their community. TAB members plan, organize and lead activities that will engage and benefit members of our community. Their activities and events can be fun, educational or service-related and they can be for anyone of any age. Typically, the TAB meets monthly at the library; however, meetings may be more frequent when planning an activity. As the coordinator, my role is to encourage, guide and support the students while allowing them the freedom to use their creativity, interests and excitement to drive the group.
This past January, we volunteered at the Washington City Mission( City Mission) Donation Center. Before we started in the warehouse, City Mission staff provided our group with an overview of their mission and retail and donation center operations. Next, we were given our assignment for the day – polishing donated furniture that was scheduled for distribution to their retail stores. Our team tackled this assignment with energy and enthusiasm! In February, we volunteered to serve brunch at the City Mission kitchen and dining hall. TAB members took food and drink orders, plated
Before I knew it, fall is already on our doorstep. We went through a super busy and yet rewarding summer. In addition to our regular children’ s programs like Family Night, Lego Club and Story Times, we offered our highly anticipated Summer Reading Camp and a newly designed weekly Art Camp – Dabbling DaVinci’ s. This past summer, we had offered 80 children’ s and adult programs with a total attendance of 3,357. Thanks to all our supporters and fans, you have created a community of library users.
In order to jumpstart literacy skills to young children, our library will be partnering with the Canon-McMillan School District to implement“ iLearn to Read Initiative” for all kindergarteners. Our goals are to instill the habit of lifelong learning and to deliver a library card into every kindergartener’ s hand. In September, our children’ s staff will be present at the Open Houses of all elementary schools to meet and greet parents / guardians. You will learn more about our“ iLearn to Read Initiative” there. Also, Ms. Barb and Ms. Amy, our beloved children’ s librarians, will be making visits to all the kindergarten classrooms this fall, to present stories and to get to know the next generation of readers.
Please take a look at our listing of events. I am sure you will find a few good reasons to hang out at the library. We have an appealing and spacious building for everyone to enjoy. I will see you at the Library. the hot food, served the attendees, cleared plates and stocked the breakfast drink area while I volunteered for dish duty in the kitchen. When brunch was over, we had a greater appreciation for the effort and teamwork required to prepare and serve meals on a daily basis.
On a Friday evening in April, we held our first Trivia Night competition: Trivia Night of the Round Tables. Nine teams, comprised of four people per team, competed for a cash first prize answering questions from 30 different categories. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed snacks and drinks while we challenged their minds. Raffle prizes were handed out during breaks in the competition. It was an enjoyable evening for all!
At the suggestion of one our TAB members, in May we kicked off the Teen Writers’ Club. This club is open to students in grades 7 – 12 who want to meet with other teen writers monthly to write, share and support each other through the creative process. Additionally, the high school book club, Page Turners, continues to meet monthly, and recently read“ Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell,“ Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo and“ Flowers in the Attic” by V. C. Andrews.
We are hard at work planning our next activities. We hope to see you at a future meeting or event!
