CITY BRIEFLY OF MCKEESPORT BRENTWOOD NEWS
It must be looking a lot like Christmas when you hear me telling you to … PLEASE MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!! LOCAL Businesses that is! Of course I am referring to shopping and dining as much as you can right here in Brentwood. I do write about this topic every year and this year will be no different. So this year I am again preparing my own“ Top Ten List” as to why you should keep your Christmas shopping local.
10. More Holiday Cheer to spread since you will not get Grinch like riding around the parking lot of South Hills Village trying to find a parking spot and then getting more grumpy when you come out and your forget where you parked!!( that never happened to me …)
9. The Money you save on gas can go to that“ special” holiday gift for yourself!( New iPhone 8 perhaps?).
8. Get better service locally. Try finding someone to help you with a question at one of“ those big box” hardware stores compared to Keener’ s who always is ready to assist.( Remember,“ If Keener’ s doesn’ t have it, you don’ t need it!”)

7. You get to purchase that new Ju Ju Smith-Schuster shirt while supporting the community. Did you know that for every $ 100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $ 68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures? Spend that online and $ 0 comes home! In addition, I challenge anyone to find a better deal for a sports team shirt anywhere other than Definitely You!
6. Find something unique for“ Hard to shop for Uncle Fish”. Get him a big box of chocolates from Goodielicious. Small local businesses tend to select their products based on their interests and like rather than giant marketing campaigns for“ junk” nobody really wants( or needs).
5. Can get your kids off of the couch and working. Local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.
4. Support the 4th of July Parade while purchasing a case of Blue Moon from Zoe’ s Beer. Community Organizations receive an average
250 % more support from local business owners than from large“ big box” national chains. 3. Flight Blight while dining at 51 Wings, DiSalvo’ s Pizza, China Wok or Wang’ s Kitchen, JT’ s, or the Cracked Egg or while getting so pretty at Red’ s Barber Shop or Supercuts, after getting your nails done at Nails by Sang Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community. They tend to invest a lot into keeping their businesses aesthetically pleasing, modern, clean, and OCCUPIED.
2. We can help build up and promote Brentwood. A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.( need an oil change? Look to further than Economy Auto in Brentwood for exceptional service)
And the Number 1 Reason to“ Mind Your Brentwood Businesses” this holiday season( and year round)…
1. Gomez( our cat) highly endorses ERB Physical Therapy in Brentwood on Rt. 51 who helped his mummy with her shoulder so she can pick him up to snuggle!
The“ Buy Brentwood” campaign began in 2011 when the Brentwood Borough Council adopted a resolution asking everyone to consider Brentwood“ first” when shopping during the holiday season. The " Buy Brentwood " campaign is dedicated to increasing visibility and prosperity of Brentwood Borough’ s locally owned and operated independent businesses through a grassroots campaign of education and publicity.
This concept goes with Brentwood’ s 3 / 50 project. That is where you pick 3 of your favorite businesses in the community each month and spend $ 50 at each.( Or $ 40 or $ 20). The point is to support the local businesses first. The“ Buy Brentwood” initiative doesn’ t mean swearing off all chains or franchises. It promotes“ balance” of the money you currently spend each month and to possibly choose a local independent owned business or restaurant first. Just as there are things in a locally owned store that you can’ t find in a big box, there are also things in a big box you can’ t find in a locally owned store( that special customer service for one thing.) We simply need to think about where our dollars are best invested, consider the greater amount of revenue local businesses return to the community, then purchase accordingly. Otherwise, local economies suffer irreparable harm. So this Holiday Season, let’ s start by first giving back to the Community in which we live by supporting those businesses that help make Brentwood such a great place to live.
On behalf of my wife Michelle( and Gomez), may you all have a wonderful Christmas and prosperous New Year!!
