BRENTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS REV UP FOR WORLD FINALS AFTER DOMINATING F1 IN SCHOOLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Five Brentwood high school girls fueled by their passion for science , technology , engineering , and mathematics ( STEM ), ventured into the F1 in Schools national competition in mid-April . Not only did they clinch the coveted title of US National Champions and sped ahead of their competitors with the fastest car ( knockout race champions ) and best-engineered car .
“ I am proud of my all-girls group for winning first place . The other teams ( Texas / Illinois ) who regularly compete at the national finals call me and Mrs . Hughes ( co-sponsor ) the ‘ king and queen of third place ’. We finally have our first-place trophy ,” said sponsor and technology teacher Beau Sedlar .
The ALL GIRLS team made of up seniors Maryam Al Mrayani , Naomi Nordeen , Kiersten Finnigan and juniors Millie Foley and Jessica Yee are now headed to the World Finals this year . The date and the location of the world finals has not yet been released by F1 in Schools , so the team is anxiously awaiting to find out where their next challenge will take them .
“ We have been looking at the F1 race schedule to try and guess where the world finals will be . The competition typically follows the professional F1 race schedule so we have been looking at Australia , the United Kingdom , Italy , Brazil and other locations where we could go for the competition . It ’ s so exciting to think about where we end up going ,” said team social media advisor Kiersten Finnigan .
The team , known as Redemption Racing , has been working together to prepare for the national qualifier since September .
“ I put in hundreds of hours into creating our car and to see my work pay off made me feel ecstatic . Before the awards ceremony started , I was so nervous I could not sit still ,” said Engineering / Design Manager Foley .
And their work has only just begun . To get ready for the world finals , the girls will have to remake many aspects of their car design , marketing and project management to make sure it fits the rules and specifications for the next level of competition .
