BRENTWOOD POLICE NEWS

Our police department has an exciting new update for our residents ! We are happy to let you know that with the help of Brentwood Borough Council and Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr ., our department was able to acquire 2 different UAS ( Unmanned Aerial Systems ) which are commonly referred to as “ drones .” These tremendously useful machines have multiple indoor and outdoor applications that they can be used for , and of course the number one reason for their use is to keep our officers and our community safe .
Some people hear the word “ drone ” and immediately assume that we ’ ll be peering in windows or watching people in their backyards or otherwise looking to emulate George Orwell ’ s “ 1987 ”— please rest assured that this is certainly not the case ! Our department always operates with the highest degree of integrity and respect for civil rights . These handy little drones have far-reaching capabilities that justify their use in a great many situations where it may be dangerous for officers or civilians to immediately access an area .
Drones have seen use by police departments across the US both inside a building and outside to better aid police officers responding to a call or a crime scene . Of our department ’ s two drones , one drone will be used for indoor situations to promote officer safety and the other will be used for outdoor applications such as locating missing people , crime scene
analysis , and tactical operations . Outdoor operation of a drone is what you might typically think of , because the outdoor drone operates as the department ’ s “ eye in the sky ”: we can locate evidence , spot people hiding around corners , and get a bird ’ s eye view of a crime scene to better evaluate movements and patterns , among multitudinous other applications . Drone use isn ’ t limited to a SWAT deployment or a life-or-death situation either ; they can be used for something as simple as recording activity in a crime scene , reconstruct car crashes for better documentation , and viewing traffic patterns too . Inside , drones are useful because they can ensure a room is clear with no risk to an officer , and they can track people moving in and out of a room or a building more easily than a single officer can by sight and memory alone .
Our department currently has 2 certified operators . Sergeant Josh Scott is the department coordinator who oversees the program and is partnered with Officer Scott Massey . Both officers have successfully passed the FAA Part 107 certification class and diligently train with other pilots in the SHACOG region and continue to challenge and improve their skills to benefit our officers in the field . Our department is excited to have this opportunity to provide our residents and guests with topnotch service and safety .
