Historically Important
Whitehall has a very active historical society that works to preserve the past for the future .
BY PAMELA PALONGUE
Whitehall Borough was once a part of Baldwin Township . It seceded in 1948 to form an independent community . In 2023 , Whitehall celebrated its 75th anniversary . The Whitehall Borough Historical Society was formed in 2022 and serves as a repository for the notable history of the community .
The society ’ s president , John Wotus , adds , “ There are people still living in Whitehall today who remember the beginnings of the borough . We want to document these early days , so that they are there for our children and grandchildren to learn and enjoy .”
The Whitehall Borough Historical Society already has thousands of artifacts , including more than 500 photos of the early Whitehall Fire Company , but there is always room for more . Members are calling for all residents who have vintage photos of the borough , events , books , documents or any other historical items to consider donating them .
Many times these items are simply thrown away , but they are little bits and pieces that tell the story of Whitehall Borough . If residents would like to donate artifacts , or even loan them for temporary exhibits , they can take them to the Whitehall Public Library during regular library hours . They will be asked to fill out
Whitehall Tavern Inn , which may have been the namesake of Whitehall .
a form specifying whether each item is a donation or a temporary loan .
The historical society has many fundraising activities throughout the year , and by participating , you are showing your support for the preservation of our area history .
Approximately four presentations a year are planned as well . These interesting talks feature prominent local historians , authors and educators who speak on topics from the earliest history of the land itself , to 20th century topics such as World War II and the mid-century era .
If you ’ re interested in becoming a member of the Whitehall Borough Historical Society , individual memberships are available at $ 10 per year , $ 20 for a household , and $ 50 for a business / organization . You can email whitehallhistory100 @ gmail . com for more information . With your membership , you and three others can also get free admission to the Heinz History Center .
