INDUSTRY INSIGHT EYE CARE SPONSORED CONTENT Helps Pioneer New Vitamins for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) AIO is pleased to announce the start of our new Vitamin supplements designed specifically for our patients with low and high risk Age-related Macular Degeneration. ARMD is one of the most severe ocular conditions, robbing almost two million Americans of their central vision. Over the last decade, it has been recognized that adequate nutrition is essential in supporting eye health. Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) researchers reported in 2001 that a nutritional supplement combining vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc and copper can reduce the risk of late AMD by 25%. In 2006, the AREDS research group, which is based at NIH’s National Eye Institute (NEI), began a second study called AREDS2 to determine if they could improve the original AREDS formulation. This study was a major clinical study, and the goal of the AREDS2 study was to determine if altering the original AREDS antioxidant and zinc formulation would further reduce the risk of moderate to advanced AMD. The study was an independent 5 year clinical study with 4,200 participants. Based on study results, the NEI proposed a modification to the original AREDS supplement formula as follows: Vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 400 IU, zinc 80 mg, copper 2mg, lutein 10mg and zeaxanthin 2mg. By closely working with Arnet Labs and following the new recommendations and guidelines of the AREDS2 study, Dr. Miguel Busquets, Dr. Brian Jewart and Dr. Christopher Seebruck have helped pioneer two vitamin formulas specifically designed for their own patients’ needs. They are now working directly with this new manufacturer that responds immediately to our doctors’ requests. This unique relationship enables the doctors at AIO to rapidly update the vitamin formulations necessary for your eye care needs based on current research and recommendations, which is something that is not possible with mass-produced brands. The doctors are pleased to offer this convenience to our patients in all of our offices or via mail order. As an AIO patient, you can have the confidence that your surgeon is using the most advanced technologies, products and procedures to help you attain your vision goals. Investing in research is just another way AIO demonstrates our ongoing commitment to achieving the best results for your vision care.
