BWEF Is Growing Student Success with Its
SEED INNOVATION GRANTS
Sometimes students need help with more than just academics . Thanks to Seed Innovation grants from The Baldwin-Whitehall Educational Foundation ( BWEF ), BWSD faculty are implementing several special projects that are designed to help students feel more adaptable and secure while also developing their social , emotional , and intellectual skills .
Seed Innovation grants offer support and recognition for innovative teaching programs , ideas , and methodologies that support BWEF ’ s goals of improving learning outcomes , increasing students ’ test scores , preparing students for post-high school employment , or furthering students ’ abilities to apply classroom learning to real world situations . Since 2018 , Seed Innovation grants have provided nearly $ 50,000 in value to the District .
Thanks to the generosity of the Foundation ’ s community partners HHSDR Architects & Engineers , Novum Designs , GBU Life , and the Pennsylvania Public Education Foundation , as well as the 2023 mini-golf fundraiser , BWEF is funding five Seed Innovation grants for a total value of $ 8,500 in 2024 .
Sensory Garden at Whitehall Elementary School . By creatively stimulating all five senses , this interactive garden environment encourages educational exploration in a nontraditional setting while also helping students learn how to regulate their emotions and develop healthy coping skills . Faculty sponsor : Sarah Wray .
Learning Garden at Harrison Education Center . Building on the success of last year ' s curriculum-based garden activities , this grant will expand the hands-on learning opportunities across curriculum at HEC and through partnerships around Pittsburgh . Faculty sponsors : Allison Shreve , Emily Palma , Amber Snyder .
Zen Den at Baldwin Middle School . Dedicated sensory space inside the middle school provides a therapeutic environment where students can seek respite and decrease anxiety through soft seating , meditative music , calming essential oils , mini sand gardens , and a multitude of tools that support self-regulation and students ’ mental health . Faculty sponsor : Karen Casper .
Freshman Frenzy at Baldwin High School . Ninth-grade students entering high school will enjoy a newly-designed welcoming experience , including all-day orientation , a family tailgate , and new social activities that will result in better attendance , greater participation in activities inside and outside of school hours , and increased academic success . Faculty sponsors : Denise Wells , Julie Sumper , Brandon Whitfield .
Purple Pantry at Baldwin High School . The Purple Pantry is a reboot of the Highlander Pantry project that was paused during the pandemic . It provides clean clothing , hygiene supplies , and toiletries in a private setting for students in need of greater support , which gives them a better opportunity to succeed socially , emotionally , and academically . Faculty sponsors : Elizabeth Allemang , Francesca Cappetta , Rebecca Mackin , Kathryn Streets .
