Founded in 2014, the Scheuermann’ s Disease Fund is a patient advocacy organization supporting those affected by the disease. Based in Venetia, it is the only charity in the world solely dedicated to helping Scheuermann’ s patients and 100 % volunteer, so each dollar donated goes to help those in need.
Scheuermann’ s disease strikes kids in adolescence, causing a pronounced curvature that if left untreated can lead to lifelong chronic pain and complications. Affecting 0.4 percent to 8 percent of adolescents— second only to scoliosis— it’ s often overlooked and undiagnosed.
The organization’ s mission? Raise awareness, advocate for early detection, and work with the medical community to advance research to better understand how Scheuermann’ s impacts the quality of life in adults. The charity has helped people in more than 50 different countries while also working closely with the local community.
The annual fall fundraiser is its signature event and principal source of donations, allowing for:
• Support Group Education— the charity helps administer multiple patient-focused Facebook groups with thousands of members.
• Care Package Distribution— more than 1,400 global“ care packages”( pamphlets, wristbands, tees) mailed free worldwide to help with education.
• International Doctor Database— patient referral database of experienced spinal care specialists.
• Patient Education— webinars, collaborating with other spine-based charities, data collection for use in research.
• Partnerships— teaming with local schools and organizations( like the Baldwin-Whitehall Educational Foundation, membership in the Peters Township and BBW chambers of commerce), doctors, researchers, and corporations to help identify symptoms for early detection.
• Medical Advisory Board— spine surgeons with extensive experience in treating Scheuermann’ s patients.
“ Know the signs. If you or a loved one notice ongoing back pain or difficulty sitting / standing straight, seek an evaluation from a spine specialist. Early diagnosis is the most important step towards improving outcomes and quality of life for people with Scheuermann’ s disease.”
Beyond the program support provided by the Scheuermann’ s Disease Fund’ s fall event, it’ s also about building bonds. The fundraiser fosters a sense of support and solidarity among the local community, patients, families, friends and supporters.
