Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of Your Borough Manager cKeesport rentwood

CITY BRIEFLY OF MCKEESPORT BRENTWOOD NEWS
While attending one our fabulous“ Taking It To The Streets” events, someone who after finding out I was the Borough Manager asked me what does a Borough Manager do? I asked him what he thought. His answers were“ runs the town” to“ attends a lot of meetings.” And while there’ s some truth to both, the real answer is somewhere in the middle.
As Borough Manager, I work behind the scenes to help keep Brentwood running smoothly. That means turning the Council’ s policy decisions into action, coordinating with our Police, Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Community & Economic Development, Code / Building, Engineering and Administrative departments, managing the Borough’ s budget, human resources and responding to issues that pop up every single day( and trust me, there’ s always something popping up).
While I don’ t fill potholes, patrol our streets, or run community events myself, I work to make sure the amazing staff who do those things have the tools, resources, and support they need. I also work with our elected officials to plan for Brentwood’ s future— so we’ re not just reacting to problems, but preparing for what’ s ahead.
No Two Days Are the Same
One day I’ m helping a resident navigate a property issue. The next, I’ m reviewing engineering plans for a major infrastructure project. Some days, I’ m knee-deep in budget spreadsheets. Other days, I’ m troubleshooting why the computer in the conference room is not working.( Yes, really.) The wide variety is what makes this job so challenging— and rewarding.
Small Wins Matter Not every project makes headlines, but that doesn’ t mean it’ s not important. Coordinating sidewalk repairs, tracking down a grant for a park upgrade, or helping a resident with a problem— these everyday“ small wins” help make Brentwood a better place to live.
The Budget Whisperer
One of the more invisible parts of my job is making sure we’ re good stewards of taxpayer dollars. That means forecasting revenue, managing expenses, and getting

32 BRENTWOOD-BALDWIN-WHITEHALL creative when it comes to funding big-ticket projects— often through grant writing or partnerships. We try to stretch every dollar as far as it can go without sacrificing services.( Remember I live and pay taxes here as well.)
Team Effort All the Way
Nothing in local government happens alone. I work with a dedicated team of public servants who care deeply about this community— from the folks keeping our streets clean and safe, to those running our many recreation programs for our youth. Council sets the vision, and my job is to help bring it to life.
Worst Part of Job There are definitely tough days— especially when dealing with angry emails, long meetings, or situations where no solution will make everyone happy. That and getting blamed for things that aren’ t even under the Borough control( like when the cable goes out during a Steeler game).
Why I Love This Work
It’ s not always easy, and it’ s definitely not glamorous— but it’ s meaningful. I get to help solve real problems for real people and play a small part in shaping the future of a community I care deeply about. At the end of the day, I’ m just here to help make Brentwood the best it can be.
In many ways, I guess being Borough Manager is like being the CEO of a $ 20 million corporation— except instead of shareholders, I report to YOU: the residents. My job is to make sure Brentwood remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family, while always looking for smart, sustainable ways to move the Borough forward.
Have a question or idea? I’ m always happy to hear from residents. Email me at gzboyovsky @ brentwoodpa. gov. Let’ s keep working together to move Brentwood forward.
God Bless!
