Brentwood Borough issues combined sewage and trash bills on a monthly basis to its residents and processes their payments that are sent in . However , some residents understandably have questions relating to their payments and what can affect their payments being processed or applied . Please see below for a list of common questions that residents have concerning their payments .
FOLLOWING THE MONEY : BRENTWOOD BOROUGH SEWAGE PAYMENTS
Question : I went up to Brentwood Bank to pay my bill and they won ’ t accept my sewage payment . Why is that ?
Answer : As many of our residents are aware , sewage payments are now provided directly to the Borough building to be cashed and applied . We no longer have a drive-through option and despite popular request we do not have a feasible way of implementing it , but the sewage drop box has been relocated outside the front doors of the municipal building at 3735 Brownsville Road for your convenience . 15-minute parking is available outside of Brentwood Presbyterian Church or in the Borough ’ s parking lot for resident use . Please do not park directly on the street to drop off your payment as this poses a traffic hazard to both pedestrians and other vehicles . You do not need a stamp on your payment if you drop it off directly at the Borough building .
Question : I put my payment in the drop box at the Borough building , but it wasn ’ t cashed until the next day . Why is that ?
Answer : To keep on top of the payments we receive , this box is emptied multiple times each day . However , the last time this box is emptied is at 2 PM from Monday to Friday . This is because our bank closes at 4 PM , and for checks to be cashed and logged for the same day they were received , all deposits must be made prior to that time . The banks and the Borough do not work on weekends , so if you submit your payment at 3 PM on Friday , for example , your payment will not be cashed and processed to your account until Monday at the very earliest .
Question : I made an electronic payment with my bank / put my check in the mail , but my payment hasn ’ t been cashed . What gives ?!
Answer : If your check has not been applied to your account , this can be for multiple reasons . Delays in mailing from the Postal Service do occur due to high volume . Delays in applying your payment can also come from not providing a full account number or not providing any account number or remittance slip with your check .
Despite popular belief , paying electronically or online with your bank does not mean the money is immediately deducted from your account and sent to the Borough . Rather , an approach that banks take with that is that the money is deducted from your account to safeguard the check from bouncing and the check is put into the mail to be delivered to the Borough building , where it is subsequently cashed . While banks mail out checks daily for their customers , it is not uncommon for us to receive mailed checks up to a week after being provided to the post office due to high volume and mail delays .

Question : I received my check back in the mail . Why wasn ’ t it cashed ?
Answer : On occasion , you may receive your check returned to you in the mail . You will also receive a letter or note stating that the check cannot be cashed and describing the reason why . Checks may not be cashed due to the following reasons :
-The check has been post-dated , meaning it was written with a future date that allows it to be cashed only on or past that date . For example , writing a check dated August 24th , 2022 , and submitting it on July 24th means that we can only cash that check on or after August 24th , 2022 , despite when you submitted it . Our sewage clerks are not permitted to hold checks at their desks , so any post-dated checks are promptly returned . If you write out a check , please make sure that you write the correct date on it . If you need to confirm if the funds in your account will cover your check , please do not submit the check until the date when the funds are available to cover your payment .
-The check does not have a signature . This is a security measure employed by banks to ensure that payments being made by check are being made by the account holder and are not fraudulent . If you do not sign the check or if you forget to sign the check , it will be returned to you as all banks require your signature to eliminate the liability of cashing an unsigned check .
-The legal line of the check was left blank . When the numerical amount on your check cannot be read for any reason , banks will defer to the legal line amount on the check . For example , if you write a check for $ 89.94 , if there is a stray pen mark on the check that makes the numerical amount possibly read $ 99.94 , the bank will read the legal line on your check as reading “ Eighty-nine dollars and 94 / 100 cents ” to confirm the amount . Leaving this line blank , even when the numerical amount is legible , results in checks being rejected by the bank .
-An account number was not included in the memo line of the check and a remittance slip was not included showing the account number . We cannot make guesses or assumptions based on addresses or partial account numbers , especially when tenants pay checks that go to a landlord ’ s sewage account . When including your account number on your check , please make sure to include the full account number ( including the -001 , -002 , and so on ) in the memo line ; otherwise , your check may be applied to an inactive account . Please always try to provide the original bottom portion of your bill with the checks so that your check is applied to the correct sewage account . We use scanners as much as possible to avoid transposition errors and designated barcodes at the bottom of our bills allow scanning to apply payments to the correct accounts . However , our scanners do not work well with photocopies , and we cannot simply scan the check itself to receive this information . If you cannot provide the original bottom portion or if you use your bank to send in a check , please make sure to include your full account number in the memo line of your check .
