GEORGE ZBOYOVSKY, PE CREDENTIALED BY INTERNATIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION BRENTWOOD PARK GROWS A SHADE GREENER On May 11th, our cherished community park became even more verdant, as 40 trees were added to the canopy. The selected species include those that will grow large and provide a reprieve from the summer heat at popular locations and those that will serve a more decorative function by adding a splash of color as they blossom each spring. These improvements were completed at minimal cost thanks to the receipt of a $4,250 award from the state- sponsored TreeVitalize program to acquire these plants, as well as through the sweat equity of the nearly 50 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and placed a shovel in our notoriously difficult clay soil. CODE ENFORCEMENT BRIEF The heavy rains that have affected our region over the last few years have extended our growing season to early November. Please show pride in your property by mowing frequently, trimming shrubbery, and removing unwanted and unsightly plants. Don’t let Fido become a nuisance to your neighbors! Residents are required to promptly clear animal waste from their premises and are prohibited from allowing any pet to defecate on a sidewalk or in an adjoining lot. In late 2018, Brentwood Borough adopted a Vacant Property Registration ordinance, and this new initiative is already paying dividends. Historically, when a home would enter the foreclosure process, there would initially be limited maintenance. While these structures eventually are reoccupied and become assets to the community again, during this interim period, they can drag down the appearance of the entire neighborhood. This new program requires the owner of each vacant property to remit a fee and to provide a local contact. Consequently, the Borough is now able to issue violation notices directly to the organization that is responsible for keeping the structure in an acceptable condition, rather than having to mail them to an out-of-state address. This initiative has reduced the number of calls for Public Works to perform yard maintenance service by nearly 40%! GRANT AWARD WILL ENSURE THAT CIVIC CENTER IS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL Between a growing roster of recreational events and an increasingly busy schedule of private parties, the Brentwood Civic Center is experiencing its greatest usage in decades. Although this facility is temporarily closed while our pool receives an extensive makeover, when the site reopens, the Borough hopes to offer a more inclusive experience to its guests. Thanks to the receipt of $20,000 through the Community Development Block Grant program, the Borough will complete upgrades to ensure that patrons with mobility impairments can access all portions of the building without assistance. This project will see the reconfiguration of the restrooms, the installation of new interior and exterior doors, and the resurfacing of the entranceway. BRENTWOOD-BALDWIN-WHITEHALL ❘ FALL 2019 45
