INDUSTRY INSIGHT SENIOR LIVING SPONSORED CONTENT Choosing a PERSONAL CARE COMMUNITY F or many older adults, moving to a personal care community is a big deal – and they’re right. They are leaving their homes full of memories and belongings to live in a smaller, unfamiliar place. It’s a monumental, life- changing event. The search for a personal care community should begin when you start to notice a physical decline that is preventing your older family members from accomplishing much of their regular tasks such as cleaning the house or shopping for groceries. This is a sign that things are changing and they are going to need more help as time goes on. Sometimes families don’t realize they may need help until they’re receiving it. This was the case for Dina Costa and her aunt who received services from Asbury Heights’ rehabilitation center before making it her home. “My aunt needed rehab services following a hospital stay,” says Dina. “With its close proximity to my home, Asbury seemed like a good choice.” Discover Personal Care at Asbury Heights Act now! It was suggested for its intimacy,” says Dina. “It’s quaint and the residents quickly get to know the other residents and caregivers. “In our experience, Asbury Heights has afforded us quality care in a beautiful setting. We appreciate the staff and feel confident in the care being given.” Oftentimes older adults and their family members wait until there is a medical or personal crisis before searching for a personal care community. This scenario often becomes a scramble – a last-minute effort that could lead to a rushed decision and, ultimately, a less-than-desired experience for everyone involved. Being proactive and doing research before services are needed will allow you to compare communities and the services they offer. One area frequently overlooked, or not recognized as a concern, is social isolation. Most people enjoy forming relationships and thrive around friends. As mobility and health issues increase, older adults tend to spend more time home alone. The loss of frequent, personal contact can have a significant impact on emotional stability and can lead to depression at any time. Staying active and engaged is crucial to maintaining a higher quality of life. In many cases, we have seen residents thrive upon moving to Asbury Heights. The recreational programs at Asbury Villas, a 77-bed personal care community, are a favorite among residents and their families. With opportunities to participate in off- campus events and volunteer for projects to help those in need, residents can remain quite active and engaged. For Barry Hodges and his parents, the wide array of recreational opportunities was a major draw to the community. “One of the reasons my parents and I decided on Asbury Villas was because of the sponsored activities and bus trips to various locations and festivals around the Pittsburgh area,” says Barry. It’s important to choose a personal care community that adequately addresses the health, social and spiritual needs of its residents. Researching your options before there’s an emergency will allow you to make informed, sound decisions as a family.
