In an instant, an ordinary day turned into every parent’ s nightmare...
Fifteen-year-old Jimmy Warden collapsed during a workout, and the people around him had only seconds to respond. The staff at the YMCA did not hesitate. They stepped in, called for help, and began CPR. They brought the AED. And they stayed with him. Because they were trained, prepared, and willing to act, a family was given something priceless: more time with their son, grandson, nephew. What stands out just as much as their actions is who they are. The YMCA staff were not looking for recognition or praise. They simply saw a young person in danger and did everything they could to save his life. That kind of courage does not happen by accident— it comes from training, readiness, compassion, and character.
What happened that day is a powerful reminder that CPR and AED training are not just certifications. They are the difference between helplessness and action. They are the reason a family gets another hug, another laugh, another ordinary day together. In this case, they are the reason Jimmy is still here.
Emergencies don’ t happen in perfect places— they happen in everyday spaces like the YMCA. In one of the worst moments of the Wardens’ lives, the staff became steady hands in the chaos. As one responder said,“ As long as he’ s OK, that’ s all that matters.”
Jimmy’ s father, Christopher Warden, shared,“ The YMCA has always been more than a building to our family. It has been a place of community, friendship, and support. The staff members on the ground— the ones who know the families, who care about the kids, who show up every day and do the real work— are the ones who make all the difference. On that day, they did more than their jobs. They helped save our son’ s life.
“ From our family, thank you to the Spencer Family YMCA, especially Rob Lakandula, Jayden Mills, Casey Prindle, Danny Richards and everyone who helped that day. Because you were ready, Jimmy is here— and our gratitude will last a lifetime.”
