A Little Bit of Heaven in the Backyard
For over a quarter of a century , Santel Landscape and Design has been beautifying the homes and businesses of the South Hills .
Started by Dave Santel , Santel Landscape and Design ’ s appeal to clients is the fact that he listens to what they want and builds their dreams .
“ I use a very customized , personal approach with people ,” Santel says . “ I meet everybody we work with and listen to what they ’ re looking for regarding their landscape or hardscape . People want to be able to use their outdoor space and they don ’ t realize how nice it can be .”
Santel Landscape and Design specializes in patio and outdoor living spaces using paver stone or different types of concrete , including stamped concrete and exposed aggregate . It also excels in designing and constructing firepits and fireplaces with seat walls , as well as water features such as fountains , natural ponds and waterfalls .
“ Firepits have been the ‘ in ’ thing for the last few years ,” notes Santel . “ They ’ re great for having friends over for a glass of wine . We utilize specialized lighting to highlight and enhance areas after the sun goes down . I use the word ‘ inviting .’ You ’ re going to want to go outside and enjoy .”
For home or business owners needing more “ utilitarian ” landscape features , such as retaining walls , Santel can design and build ones that blend into your existing look rather than seeming like an afterthought . With some new landscaping , the walls will add beauty to your site . Santel also installs concrete driveways . Exposed aggregate is a beautiful alternative to regular concrete and is not as expensive as pavers .
One of the things that Dave Santel says his clients appreciate is the fact that he can scale the design to enable them to phase in their master plan over the course of several seasons .
“ I work very hard to give customers options that fit their budgets ,” he adds . “ A project doesn ’ t have to be extraordinarily expensive to be beautiful . We can build projects incrementally to meet customer needs .”

Santel installed the landscaping for the Peters Township McDonald ’ s , which included two waterfalls , a pond and decorative gravel . Robert Morris University used Santel ’ s services for several thousand feet of paver patio installation , retaining wall design and construction and redesign of most of the common areas on campus . Santel also completed Rotary Park in Peters Township , at the corner of McMurray and Valleybrook roads , with trees , landscaping , a patio , benches and flower boxes . The staff members are particularly proud of work donated to the Wounded Warrior Project for Marine Sgt . Doug Vitale .
“ There ’ s no job too large or too small for us , and I manage each job down to the last detail so we ’ re not tying up your yard for longer than necessary ,” Santel said . “ We also only take on one or two projects at a time so we can focus on the one at hand and get it done in the most efficient manner possible . People always compliment us on how fast we get the job done and how safe and neat we are when we ’ re working .”
