At Lois Johnson Learning and Child Care Center, summertime is just another time to do what it does best – teach children of all ages what they need to know to succeed in life. During the summer, education just takes the form of summer camp, rather than classroom instruction. Lois Johnson offers a school-age camp in Franklin Elementary School located in Bethel Park. Dru Amand, director of Lois Johnson Learning and Child Care Center, said summer camp offers unique opportunities for students through age 12. “Our camp begins at 6:30 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. five days a week, and includes all kinds of activities such as field trips, cooking classes, drama, bicycling and more,” she said. “We take advantage of the summer weather and ensure campers are outside as much as possible and that activities are developmentally appropriate in regard to their social and emotional well-being.” So, your child may be at a Pirates game one day, the Carnegie Science Center the next, playing sports in the school gym, or outside on the playground. There’s never a shortage of activities available, and there’s certainly never an opportunity to be bored. Lois Johnson excels at all aspects of child care and education because the center’s been around for over four decades. Amand said that some of the parents she meets today were students of Lois Johnson when they were younger. “Lois Johnson was a real person. She started a nursery school back before kindergarten was in the public schools, and she would drive around SPONSORED CONTENT and pick the children up to take them to class,” Amand said. “She ran it out of her house, which is still the same building we’re in today. Because of the size limitations built into the house, we’ve always been a small-group child care facility. You won’t see 30 children in a room with three caregivers. You might see up to 10 children in a preschool classroom with one caregiver at Lois Johnson. It’s more homelike and conducive to learning.” What’s more, Lois Johnson Learning and Child Care Center has a very low turnover rate for the industry, so the same faces that brought smiles to your child last year and the year before will most likely be there waiting for your child again this summer. All staff members have the necessary training and legal clearances as well, so you can be assured that your child is in good care. If you have younger children, the Lois Johnson Early Childhood Center located on Brightwood Road specializes in catering to the needs of children ages 6 weeks through kindergarten, offering them a safe, educational environment, where they can learn, grow and prepare for the world of school that awaits them. The center specializes in understanding the life of working parents, and goes out of its way to ensure that your child has fun and learns during the workday.
