EMS teams honored for role
in acute heart attack care
accreditation
Patients at Jefferson Hospital will have access to the most
advanced cancer treatment available at a new comprehensive,
integrated outpatient cancer center located in the South Hills
Medical Building on the hospital campus in Jefferson Hills.
Members of more than 25 local EMS teams were among those
honored for their role in helping Jefferson Hospital achieve
the distinction as the first health care facility in Pennsylvania
to earn recognition from the American Heart Association as a
Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center.
The Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute at Jefferson
Hospital is part of a network of hospitals and nearly 50 locations in
the region that represent the most advanced and individualized
cancer care for more than 10,000 patients each year.
As a nationally recognized and leading multidisciplinary cancer
center with well-developed surgical, radiation and medical
oncology networks, Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute
has earned many distinctions, including:
• Leading expertise in oncology, nationally and internationally
recognized for integration, innovation, quality, patient safety,
cancer research and clinical trials
• Among the finest in the entire country for implementing best
practices in caring for patients with leading survival rates and
outcomes for every type of cancer
Alexander Kuhn, MPH, senior director, Mission: Lifeline,
and Richard Shaw, chairman of the board, American Heart
Association Pittsburgh Metro, presented a certificate to the
hospital acknowledging the accreditation. Mr. Kuhn noted
that Jefferson is one of only 40 hospitals in the United States
to achieve the accreditation. “You are a sitting example for the
rest of the country,” he said.
Richard Sullivan, MD, EMS Director, Jefferson Hospital, said
the accreditation “acknowledges Jefferson’s commitment and
success in implementing an outstanding standard of care for
heart attack patients, and our EMS partners are an important
component of that care.”
• The largest American Society for Radiation Oncology/American
College of Radiology-accredited radiation oncology program
in the country and the first and only one in Pittsburgh, a
distinction indicative of the highest quality care, expertise,
equipment and patient safety available

certification from the Foundation for the Accreditation of
