Resolve to Get Your Affairs
in Order this Spring
hen the calendar changes, people
sometimes don’t just embark upon a
new month and a new season, but they
may experience certain life changes. The family
dynamics may change with a gain or loss of loved
ones, children entering adulthood or starting
college. Family members sometimes suffer an
injury or illness, get married, or experience divorce.
Alternatively, changes during the year may have
been more material in nature. For example you
bought or sold a house, retired, or received a large
gift or inheritance.
Each one of these changes impacts our lives -
and also the lives of those around us. The effects
may reverberate not just during one month or a
particular year, but also into the future. The start
of the 2020 Spring Season is the perfect time for
all of us to reflect, and to resolve to make any
necessary changes, to ensure that our loved ones
are protected, and our affairs are in order.
“Spring time is a good time to take stock of our
lives, and bring order to our lives,” said Joe Covelli
of Covelli Law Offices. “A lot of people experience
life-changing events over the course of a year
that call for discussion – and require attention.
Combine that topic with the new sprouting buds
and new laws regarding estate planning - and a
review makes total sense. It might only take you 15
to 30 minutes. I find that I’m informing some folks
(often for the first time) of the content of their asset
titles and financial holdings - and we discuss their
objectives should something happen to them.”

Certain life changes can dictate how your assets
are distributed if you pass away. A divorce will
lead to the breakup of your family unit and a new
marriage may result in stepchildren or adopted
children. A blended family may require attention on
your part to assure that everyone is treated fairly. If
not clearly spelled out, things can get complicated
very quickly. The satisfaction of placing things in
order contributes to peace of mind.
When travelling by car or plane during the
coming warm months, the possibility of injury
certainly exists. If you’re in a situation where your
children or grandchildren are going to spend
time staying with family members or friends, and
there is sickness, an accident or illness - who gets
the parental power of attorney (where another
person can be given the power to make treatment
decisions in your absence as a parent)? We can
review these matters ahead of time - before you’re
in the middle of these situations – which can
provide you with assurance…and peace of mind.
