TEAM RANGER WENT ON A RIVER QUEST

The fifth grade students on Team Ranger learned a great deal about Pittsburgh ’ s three rivers , thanks to a field trip with RiverQuest . RiverQuest is a river-based educational adventure program that utilizes a hands-on approach and technology to further the development of students ’ critical thinking skills , technological literacy and environmental awareness .

The students boarded Explorer , a fully equipped , state of the art laboratory / passenger vessel and sailed Pittsburgh ’ s rivers to learn more about the ecosystems supported by the rivers .
The students participated in a variety of experiments , including analyzing chemical and physical water quality indicators , examining micro and macro invertebrates in the water and identifying birds and native fish species in and along the water .
It was a great day of learning !
Team Ranger students were surprised to see what organisms are living in the Three Rivers .
Through the use of microscopes , the students were able to study even the smallest organisms .
Students enjoyed working together to observe and identify the things that can be found in the river .
