FROM THE EXECUTIVE

Extension team keeps busy

Our industry development team have locked away a busy back half of the year to assist growers and their workers with opportunities to improve their skill level and knowledge . The processing capacity bottleneck has led to more growers having to hold stock for longer on their farms . To protect the quality of their crop , on-site fumigation has become a more common practice and the ABA has held three field days across to provide the latest information on the most effective methods to maintain pest-free stockpiles . The sessions were filmed and have been posted on our website if growers are looking for more information on stockpile management .
The feedback from those who attended was very positive . The value of attending an ABA field day cannot be underestimated . Aside from the acumen of the ABA team , there is always experienced growers present to add valuable contributions to the discussions . The popular ABA hosted irrigation maintenance courses are on again this year and are must for new employees across the industry . While there is general agreement that the industry has installed the most efficient irrigation technology on farm , the efficiencies gained by having trained operators is just as important . Keep an eye out for dates and venues

Weather outlook into spring , summer looks

The Bureau of Meteorology has cast a dry outlook for the second half of the year . Although rain still continues to fall , the Bureau is predicting that the end is in sight and we could go back into El Nino conditions for at least two years . This will inevitably bring industry water use back into focus and prompt many to review water purchasing strategies in an environment where the Murray Darling Basin Plan is likely to be implemented in some form or another . The ABA continues advocate that the almond industry does not waste water and that maximising the value of every drop received from its allocation is a good news story . It has been increasingly clear that irrigators and their communities are committed to sustainable basin outcomes that not only sustain the environment , the sacred lands of First Nations people and their communities , but changing urban based perceptions on food production is a major challenge . While many consumers are concerned about the planet , many are more disconnected with the realities of food production than ever before .
