Field Days share fumigation skills

Growers and industry professionals gathered at field days in the Riverland , Riverina and Sunraysia , pictured above ) to learn more about fumigation .
THE ABA ’ s Industry Development team facilitated several field days recently in each of the almond growing regions : Riverland , Sunraysia and Riverina . The field days aimed to address the need for increased knowledge and skills in almond fumigation , storage and aeration among growers and industry professionals . The events also highlighted ongoing trials and the ABA ’ s extension program and activities . The field days featured presentations from experts , including Jo Holloway , Research Entomologist , Department of Primary Industries NSW , Bianca Robbins and Chris Roe , General Manager and National Operations Manager respectively , from Genera Biosecurity ( Australian Fumigation ), and Andrew Fisher , Director of Harveston Aeration Solutions . Additionally , growers and industry professionals shared their experiences and learnings during Q & A sessions and panel discussions . The event ’ s context revolved around the challenges faced by growers due to increased production and wet conditions which have resulted in slower processing times and the need for on-farm storage . Fumigation emerged as a crucial method to protect harvested almonds from pests whilst ensuring and maintaining kernel quality . However , industry feedback suggested that there was a need for additional information and support with particular regards to effective fumigation practices . Thus , the field day aimed to bridge this knowledge gap and provide insights from commercial professionals , researchers , and experienced growers . Key learnings from the field days included understanding fumigation principles , pest lifecycles , commercial fumigant products , proper and safe application of fumigants , monitoring techniques , and cross-industry experiences from the grain industry .
