Closing the loop means uncovering ways to minimise waste and maximise productive reuse - two targets that are a focus for the almond industry .
From page 7 grade almonds are used to make other products . Select Harvests is the first almond processor in Australia to utilise an x-ray to remove almonds with pinhole damage from high-quality stock . At Select Harvests ’ processing line ' Project Parboil ', lower-grade almonds are blanched , roasted , and used to produce diced almonds , almond meal , and almond paste for almond milk . Nothing from the parboil facility goes to waste , with skins and other organic matter previously considered unusable now goes back into organic matter for compost production . The development of the parboil facility has significantly changed how lower-grade almonds are utilised by Select Harvests . Previously , a large proportion of
lower-grade products was exported to the United States for processing , primarily to produce an almond paste for almond milk . The parboil processing facility allows Select Harvest to skip the middleman , with the company now making almond paste on site . Select Harvests now supplies almond paste to two major Australian producers of almond milk . Sustainability is not just about caring for the environment , but is also about creating sustainable futures for communities and the industry . Select Harvests ' closed-loop system has benefited the community by creating new employment opportunities . The development of the Co- Gen power plant generated nine permanent roles . Project Parboil now has 30 full-time employees .
