From page 27 The cost of WOR is a barrier to the practice currently being used in Australia . The Merbein trial in January 2022 cost $ 8,279 per acre using machinery that was locally available . In California it is estimated to cost $ 1,212 per acre and incentives are provided by the US state and federal governments for around 50 % of this . Brent Holtz will travel to Australia in January to inspect the WOR project in Merbein and will accompany the ABA on a regional tour where he will meet with growers in the Riverland , Sunraysia and Riverina to share his knowledge about WOR and pitfalls to avoid . It is anticipated that there will be a lot of interest in this topic as growers are looking for alternatives to improve soil health and embracing the shift towards regenerative agriculture . The regional tour intends to demystify what ’ s involved in the process of whole orchard recycling and what types of machines are used in the US .

With increased interest and demand we anticipate the cost will reduce over time making this practice more feasible . This is an approach that is not just applicable to the almond industry , it can benefit all tree crops and even grapevines .
