Marketing update

Export update - a focus on South-East Asia

SIGNIFICANT progress has been made over the past quarter in preparing for the next Hort Innovation funded Market Development Program . This program will run from January 2023 to December 2025 . For the first time , our next market development program will be global , incorporating activities in the Australian domestic market as well as our targeted export markets .
A key objective of our Export Market Development plan is to significantly grow our Australian almond shipments to South-East Asia . Given the serious freight and logistics issues the global almond industry faces , exporting to our near neighbours offers Australian almonds a major competitive advantage . Combined with this freight advantage are the benefits conferred through some of our Australian Free Trade Agreements . For example , Australian almonds have a 10 % tariff advantage in Thailand and a 5 % tariff advantage in Indonesia .
More than 30 customers and potential customers attended our seminar . The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia , Her Excellency Penny Williams , visited our stand and spent some time asking about the future of the Australian almond industry and our growth plans for Indonesia . As part of our trade mission , we had a tour of a major traditional market in Jakarta . The key insight was that the higher wealth families ( upper middle class ) had home help who performed the household shopping at the traditional markets . The nut and dried fruit stalls in these markets sell the vast majority of the category volume . One of our key industry tasks is to develop commercial relationships with the importers , repackers and distributors who supply these traditional markets .
To contribute to our industry growth objectives in South-East Asia , we exhibited at two important trade exhibitions over the past three months : Food & Hotel Indonesia in Jakarta and Food & Hotel Asia in Singapore .
The Australian Almonds trade stand in the Australian pavilion at Food and Hotel Asia at the Singapre Expo .
The Australian Almonds stall at the recent Food and Hotel Indonesia trade exhibition .
Food & Hotel Indonesia was conducted at the Jakarta International Expo from July 25 to 28 . While this edition of the exhibition was smaller than its pre- Covid editions , our Australian almond stand received more interest than our previous exhibitions . The Australian Almond trade mission to Food & Hotel Indonesia included a Trade Seminar on day two which was well co-ordinated by the Jakarta Austrade team .
Food and Hotel Asia was conducted at the Singapore Expo from September 5 to 8 . We had a trade stand within the Australian pavilion which was the largest national pavilion in the whole exhibition . Our trade mission to Food & Hotel Asia included participating in networking events organised by Global Victoria , which featured our heart-shaped snack tins , and by Austrade , which included our Australian Almonds video within their agricultural compilation . Food & Hotel Asia is more a regional exhibition than FHI with customers and potential customers from Indonesia , Malaysia , Thailand , Vietnam , Philippines and Myanmar visiting our stand . A key insight from this exhibition relates to the education work required in this region where almond consumption is quite low . Conversely , this also point to the rising interest in almonds and the significant potential for growth .
