MARKETING & TRADE

Taking almonds to the world for 20 years

Next month ' s Angua trade fair marks 20 years since the launch of Australian Almonds ' collaborative export market development program . Over that time , the industry has grown significantly , and export markets are a vital part of its success .
THE Australian Almonds collaborative export market development program turns 20 at this year ’ s Anuga trade exhibition in Cologne . This year , the Anuga trade fair will be held from October 7 to 11 and is one of the largest food and beverage trade events in the world . When the Almond Board of Australia commenced its export market development program in July 2003 , Anuga was the first event selected . At this time in the Australian almond industry ’ s journey , the key task was to inform and educate the global nut market that almonds were grown in Australia and that the Australian almond industry was on a major growth trajectory . The Australian crop of 2003 was 10,238 tonnes . Within 20 years , production grew to more than 140,000 tonnes in 2022 . While due to some unfavourable growing issues outside our growers ’ control reduced our 2023 crop to 109,000 tonnes , there is a strong expectation that our 2024 crop will bounce back over 150,000 tonnes . Back in 2003 , our crop was largely sold and consumed domestically . The journey of these past 20 years has been to develop significant export markets . Our Australian almond marketers have developed a comprehensive export portfolio as our industry ships product to more than 50 countries around the world . During this growth phrase , Australian almonds have become Australia ’ s highest value horticultural export crop . Europe has always been an important market for Australian almonds which was a key driver for selecting Anuga as our first industry trade exhibition . One of the unique features of the Australian almond industry ’ s market development program has been its consistently collaborative nature . All of Australia ’ s almond exporters work together to optimise the profile and effectiveness of the Australian Almonds trade exhibitions . The Anuga exhibition in Cologne is conducted biennially and has long been considered one of the world ’ s
