Children playing in the Ghetto near a hut used it as a mosque.

Radio Ghetto began broadcasting in 2012 as a away of communiting and debating in the Ghetto.

Radio Ghetto was created in the summer of 2012 thanks to the idea of the network “Campagne in lotta”, who brought in the Ghetto all the needed equipment for the broadcast. The Ghetto was a shantytown located not far from Foggia, in Puglia (Italy). This place, as many others in Italy, seasonally hosted hundreds of migrant workers, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, and involves them in the tomato harvest.

Those kind of places are usually characterized by hard living condition, bad accommodation and illegal hiring. Since the summer of 2012 Radio Ghetto had the aim to create a debate inside and outside the Ghetto. During the broadcasts, that were totally created and managed by the migrant workers, they discussed the living condition in the Ghetto, listened to music and radio-magazine, they shared problems linked to their own migratory path and the daily life in Italy. They had also organized rapper and singer contests inside the Ghetto. Over the years, Radio Ghetto had become a free space, in which to debate and relax. The 4 years of broadcast had been possible thanks to the many volunteers, but mostly thanks to the effort from all the inhabitants of the Ghetto. SCI (Service Civil International) Italy is linked to the Radio Ghetto thanks to some activist of La Citta'dell’Utopia and Laboratorio 53.

SCI International was planning to do a study camp and awareness raising event in Foggia as part of its activities included in the PATH projecta, with the cooperation of Radio Ghetto and with the support of the European Union under the Programme "Europe for Citizens".
