Improving Hong Kong Street Waste Disposal Experience May 2019 | Page 93
Key Learnings
2. TEAM SETUP
We have 4 dedicated members from Design Change to work on this project:
There are a few key learnings for us in the past 6 months:
1. SCOPING
Project Manager
Experience Designer
At the start of the project, we wanted to address 2 questions through this
project:
A. HMW use design to help reduce street rubbish dumping, increase
recycling frequency and generate positive awareness around the needs
for waste segmentation & recycling from the locals?
B. HMW use design to create better ways of working for garbage collectors
& recyclers and make their daily job duties easier and more meaningful?
Initially, we thought the main pain point and hence design will be around
the garbage bin. But as we progressed through our user research, we
realized we were wrong, the biggest challenges lay much broader than
just the bin. It is very exciting for the team but at the same time made the
project much more challenging
For the next project, we need to better scope the challenge we want to
address by doing more initial research before deep diving into it.
Strategist
Art Director
This structure was working fine in the discover, define and ideation phase. At the start
of the project, we separated the team down into 2 streams: garbage throwers and
garbage collectors. It all worked fine until we reached design phase where we needed
to actually sketch out all our amazing ideas. We only had 1 member who can do the
sketching, creating a lot of workload for him which as a result slowed down the project
as a whole.
For our next project, we will need to come up with a phasing plan after the initial
research that we mentioned above and build a team around it instead of the other
way round.
3. WAYS OF WORKING
All four of us in the team have a day job. It is quite difficult to find a time for everyone
to meet on a weekly basis. The decision breaking the team into 2 streams was a good
one so members with similar work schedules can work more closely together. However,
during later phase of project when we needed to have more full team meeting, this
was where the challenge came. Meetings got canceled due to our work schedule
and we ended up making decision with smaller groups or individually which caused
misalignment afterwards and members got disengaged.
For our next project, we need to set a fix date and time during the week as a regular
meeting and commit to give updates, make decisions as well as splitting the tasks.
