On May 8, 2026, nursing students at Western New Mexico University participated in a hands-on CPR certification training session led by Professor Lowe. The participants included incoming nursing students preparing to begin the program as well as current Level 4 nursing students nearing graduation.
Throughout the training, students practiced essential life-saving skills using simulation manikins and received individualized instruction in emergency response techniques. Participants learned high-quality adult and child CPR, reviewed the differences between adult and pediatric resuscitation, practiced delivering rescue breaths through a tracheostomy, learned the proper use of automated external defibrillators( AEDs), and received instruction on responding to choking emergencies using the Heimlich maneuver.
The session provided students with valuable hands-on experience while reinforcing the critical thinking, teamwork, and clinical skills required to respond effectively during medical emergencies. These skills are essential for ensuring patient safety both in healthcare settings and within the community.
This educational opportunity was offered free of charge to students thanks to the support of Deans Dr. West and Dr. Petrovic, whose commitment to student success and professional development made the training accessible to all participants.
