Nursing informatics is the multidisciplinary field that links nursing science, computer science, and information technology to transform the collection, analysis, and use of health data. In this article we will define the specialty, illustrating how it serves as a bridge between clinical practice and digital innovation. We will also explain why informatics matters— highlighting its role in data‐driven decision‐making, workflow optimization, and the broader healthcare transformation toward safety, quality, and population health. Further, we will discuss career pathways, tracing the spectrum from bedside informatics liaisons to senior leadership positions such as Chief Nursing Informatics Officers( CNIOs), and review the educational and credentialing pathways that underpin professional success.
Two“ day in the life” vignettes will offer insight into the varied,
technology‐centric responsibilities undertaken by informatics professionals in diverse settings. Practical guidance for students and aspiring informaticists follows, covering engagement with current organizations, professional networking, and graduate training opportunities. Finally, we will look at how emerging technologies— particularly generative artificial intelligence( AI)— will shape the future of nursing informatics and the imperative for nurses to remain central to the design, validation, and regulation of new tools. Together, these sections provide a comprehensive overview of nursing informatics, its evolving relevance, and the pathways through which nurses can shape tomorrow’ s healthcare systems.
What Is Nursing Informatics?
Nursing informatics serves as the bridge between clinical practice and digital innovation. This specialty combines nursing science, computer science, and information technology to improve how healthcare is delivered and experienced. It transforms raw data into meaningful insights that inform clinical decisions, enhance patient outcomes, and streamline workflows( McBride & Tietze, 2022). According to the American Nurses Association( ANA), nursing informatics integrates data, information, and knowledge to support nurses, patients, and interprofessional teams in decision-making across all roles and settings( American Nurses Association, 2022).
In practice, nursing informatics professionals play a vital role in designing, implementing, and optimizing electronic health records( EHRs), clinical decision support tools, and health information systems that align with the realities of patient care. Informatics nurses
