2025 Code of Ethics for Nurses
The American Nurses Association is set to release the 2025 Code of Ethics for Nurses ( Code ) on January 29 , marking an important milestone for the association and the profession it represents . For student nurses , the Code is not only a learning tool but a lifelong guide for navigating the ethical challenges of healthcare .
Revised every decade , the 2025 Code addresses issues that are important to the modern nurse and nursing student such as racism , workplace safety , artificial intelligence , and global health equity . One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a new tenth provision to emphasize the profession ’ s role in advancing human and environmental well-being globally .
The revision process for the 2025 Code was a collaborative effort led by a panel of 49 experts , including nurses and ethicists from diverse backgrounds and practice areas . Over 600 hours were dedicated to analyzing ethical challenges faced by modern nurses , ensuring the updated Code reflects today ’ s healthcare realities . Input from more than 6,000 contributors during a public comment period further shaped the final version , making it a collective effort to protect and advance the profession .
As future nurses enter the field , the 2025 Code provides more than guidelines ; it offers a vision for how the profession can address challenges while upholding its commitment to equitable and compassionate care .
