The planning phase included budgeting , purchasing , marketing , and identifying desired nursing skills for participants . The nursing students were vehement that priority be given to how science and math inform nursing practice . Recognizing that everyone involved was touched by the Covid pandemic , a microbiology professor was invited to join the planning team resulting in the addition of a hands-on activity to identify bacteria or virus in a science lab . Several students took on the task of creating simple dosage calculations and intake and output scenarios . Planned participant giveaways included a CPR mask , stethoscope , and a scrub top emblazoned with the Shepherd University logo produced by a nursing student adept at using a Cricut for craft projects .
To market the workshops , SU-SNA officers met with the University ’ s Admissions team creating strategies for an online registration process and marketing the workshops to area school counselors to disseminate invitations to high school students interested in nursing or healthcare careers . Through the workshop experience , the SU- SNA team aimed to highlight nursing amongst the available health careers available to prospective students .
During the full day workshops , participants engaged in hands-on skills led by nursing students and faculty using the Explain , Demonstrate , Guide , and Enable ( E . D . G . E .) model ( ScoutSmart , n . d .). One of the nursing students remarked that this model was simply “ See one , Do one , Teach one .”! Using STEMN labs , the wide variety of activities included :
n Explore anatomy with real animal organs ( cow heart and eyeballs , pig thorax from throat to diaphragm )
n Team up to give rescue breaths and compressions during a code scenario using a high-fidelity manikin
n Decipher heart and lung sounds with a stethoscope using a patient simulator
n Feed a ‘ patient ’ using pudding or applesauce n Demonstrate beginning proficiency with handwashing and personal protective equipment ( PPE ) of gown , gloves , and mask
n Apply principles of safety and quality through proper ergonomics when transferring a patient
n Pair up for choking assistance using a simulation vest complete with trachea and an artificial hot dog causing obstruction
n Calculate fluid volume deficits / overload and accurate medication dosages using popular candy ( e . g ., Skittles and M & Ms ) as “ tablets ”
n Identify bacteria versus a virus in a microbiology lab n Explore high school dual enrollment options partnering with Shepherd University
n Get to know Shepherd University through an explanation of the admission process and campus tour
n Participate in learning activities in the school of nursing and science skills labs
n Receive a scrub top , pen , stethoscope , and CPR mask for use in workshop activities
Two “ The Future of YOU : BE a NURSE ” workshops were held as planned on May 30 and June 27 , 2023 . Participants experienced a high energy full-day workshop day packed with hands-on activities , lunch , a brief overview of dual enrollment opportunities including the University ’ s admission pro-
