Nurses in Clinical Research
When most hear the words “ nurse ” and “ research ” together , the role that usually comes to mind is actually that of Nurse Scientist , who builds upon clinical nursing knowledge to identify clinically relevant research questions ( Bloch and Smith Glasgow , 2023 ). The scope of nurses in clinical research falls under two main roles :
• Clinical Research Nurses ( CRNs ) are “ clinical staff nurses with a central focus on care of research participants ” ( CRN 2010 Domain of Practice Committee , 2009 ). CRNs work in dedicated clinical research settings in the community or in academic medical centers ; the NIH Clinical Center is home to the largest consolidated clinical research workforce , with 42 % of employees in nursing and patient care / support services ( NIH Clinical Center , 2023b ).
• Research Nurse Coordinators ( RNCs ) are “ primarily responsible for study coordination and management , with a central focus on managing subject recruitment and enrollment , consistency of study implementation , data management and integrity , and compliance with regulatory requirements and reporting ” ( CRN 2010 Domain of Practice Committee , 2009 ). RNCs are often hired by a Principal Investigator and support a select protocol or group of protocols .
CRNs and RNCs maintain a dynamic and collaborative partnership in supporting the clinical research .
