shortage of nurses , the need for advanced nursing roles , and early exposure for undergraduate students .
METHODOLOGY : Enhancing Aspirations in Advanced Practice Roles Through a Career Presentation
In confronting the nursing shortage , it becomes paramount to intervene at the undergraduate level . This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a targeted career presentation in increasing the knowledge of advanced nursing roles among undergraduate nursing students and their interest in pursuing advanced nursing careers or nursing faculty positions . A total of 64 students enrolled in a midwestern undergraduate nursing foundation course were asked to complete a pre-survey that assessed students ’ baseline knowledge about advanced nursing roles .
At the beginning of the Likert scale pre-survey , participants were provided with informed consent that had been approved by the institutional review board ( IRB ). The survey was conducted anonymously to ensure confidentiality so the participants would agree to the consent by proceeding with the survey . The informed consent explained the purpose of the study and assured anonymity to all the participants . The Likert scale pre-survey measured the nursing students ’ baseline knowledge of advanced nursing roles and their desires for advanced nursing education .
Survey questions included items related to students ’ familiarity with advanced nursing roles , perceptions of the importance of higher education in nursing , interest in pursuing advanced nursing education , and motivation in pursuing advanced nursing education . Following the survey , an informative career presentation was given to the nursing students . The career presentation covered various advanced nursing roles , including nurse practitioners , nurse anesthetists , midwives , etc . The presentation highlighted the education requirements , advantages , and possibilities associated with each position . Also , the presentation emphasized the critical need for nursing faculty due to understaffing and their impact on shaping nursing education ’ s future .
Immediately following the presentation , the students were given a Likert scale post-survey that included the same items as the pre-survey to evaluate changes in knowledge and aspiration . The results of the post-survey would be used to assess the effectiveness of the career presentation in influencing nursing students to pursue a career in advanced nursing . Data were quantitatively analyzed to compare pre-and post-survey responses among students . Data on comparison looked at the percentage of students who agreed or disagreed on pre- and post-surveys regarding advanced nursing knowledge , were curious about advanced nursing education , and were interested in an advanced nursing career .
