Hello wonderful readers !
I am so excited for you to read the February / March 2024 issue of Imprint — all about the advancements within nursing and the next generation of nurses . The future is upon us , and I hope you are as excited as I am to be a part of the next generation of nurses . Our fast-paced and ever advancing society calls for change agents and people unafraid to rise to the occasion . We need the people who will lead us to the next level of nursing .
As technology continues to advance , nurses must learn to adapt and use the new equipment available to us whether that be an AI wireless IV pump or a new and advanced 3D electronic charting system . Today , we see advancements so fast in technology that we get super excited about what is next . Whether it ’ s waiting in line for the newest phone , joining a virtual classroom , navigating the way through new internet forums , using a GPS on the way to work , or downloading the newest app onto your phone . We expect advancement , but what did the past generation of nurses think when they first encountered an electronic pump or the electronic medical record ? They may have been anxious about the change , yet they quickly adapted and learned to overcome the challenges in their way . I hope this generation continues to persevere just as past generations did . We confronted nursing school during a pandemic — we can face anything .
Change is the way of the future and I believe all nurses have the power to take us to the next level of nursing . We must be willing to push for change positively creating greater opportunities for nursing that will help our patients succeed in and out of our care . I believe students of NSNA can become these change agents and lead nursing to the next level .
Each generation holds a unique perspective , and you will encounter a vast variety of generations as coworkers and patients , depending on your specialty . I hope that this generation of nurses is not afraid to break barriers and create a safe yet challenging environment for all nurses to learn and grow . Nurses of all generations need to stand together as change comes and technology advances because we are stronger together . I believe that all nurses and nursing students should understand the importance of lifelong learning to continue leading nursing to the next level .
To me , the next level of nursing is full of nursing leaders who are not afraid to speak up and make a change in the environment around them , just like the early change agents of nursing . We can break barriers together by ending racism starting in nursing school . Flip to page 22 for an article on the importance of ending racism early by starting within nursing schools .
One of the most recent technological advancements is Artificial Intelligence . But how will this affect nursing or even nursing school ? Artificial Intelligence can have both positive and negative effects on your career as a nurse , so it is imperative to understand how to use it safely , wisely , and ethically .
