Hi NSNA members ,
We are truly in the thick of spring semester and I hope that you are all doing well . I implore you to pick a single day in the next two weeks that you can spend solely on you . Turn off your cellphone , clear your schedule , and spend the day doing something that makes you happy .
Nursing school teaches you how to care for others , but what isn ’ t lectured on nearly enough is caring for yourself . This issue of Imprint is focused solely on how you can be there for you ! Today we are covering the emotional , mental , and professional upkeep of the student nurse / new grad .
The bullying of nursing students is nothing new , but it sure is getting old . You deserve to feel safe and respected in whichever setting you are in whether that is the classroom or at clinical . On page 22 , Professor Mary Gemma O ’ Donnell and student Chris Chew gift us with 25 excellent scripts for students and new grads to use when being bullied by a professor , peer , or colleague .
How are you feeling mentally in this current moment ? Overwhelmed , stressed , feeling like the weight of the world is on your shoulders ? It ’ s time for a mental health check up ! If you have been struggling with poor mental health recently but don ’ t know how to go about fixing it , head to page 27 ! Sharon Tucker , Holly Carpenter , and Amy Hanley provide us with a plethora of mental health resources specifically geared towards nurses and nursing students .
As we push onward in our nursing journey , we must remember that nursing is not just a job or a calling , but a career that can take you farther than you ’ ve ever imagined possible . What have you done to form your professional development so far ? For starters , you ’ re a member of NSNA ! Two key leaders in the professional identity in nursing think space , Debra Liebig and Dr . Nelda Godfrey , breakdown the key components of professional identity in nursing and give examples of how you can get started on page 36 .
Looking ahead , we are beyond excited to see many of you at our 71st Annual Convention happening April 12-16 , 2023 in Nashville , Tennessee ! We are ecstatic to have Dr . Godfrey as our Keynote Speaker and are looking forward to line dancing the night away at our country-themed first night party ! I am saddened to announce that this will be our wonderful leader Dr . Diane Mancino ’ s last NSNA convention as Executive Director due to her upcoming retirement ( read more on page 8 ), but I ’ m positive that this will be the best one yet . You won ’ t want to miss out so be sure to register online at nsnaconvention . org by March 31st .
College is hard , nursing school is hard , and trust me when I say that you are not alone in your exhaustion . Keep pushing through this stressful period and stay focused on your dreams . A three days on , four days off work schedule is coming to you soon my friend ! I look forward to seeing all of you at convention and wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors these next couple weeks . •
