Karioth has taught more than 25,000 students in her nearly 50-year career at Florida State University ( Including mentoring Myron Rolle in his receiving the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship ) – a number that amazes and delights her . A member of the FSU faculty since 1970 , she is best known for her long-running class “ Death , the Individual and the Family ”, which attracts students from all disciplines . She has also spent 20 years teaching in the FSU London Summer Program , and recently added a London spring break program .

She is a Certified Traumatologist ( CT ) and grief counselor , and for more than 40 years , has been in private practice , helping people cope with the death of loved ones . Her particular concern is parents who have lost a child to death . She is also a wellknown popular international public speaker , renowned for her ability to mix laughter with heartwarming insights .
She graduated from Bellin School of Nursing in Green Bay Wisconsin and holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin- Madison , University of Florida and Florida State University that include two master ’ s degrees , a PhD , and post graduate work in genetics at the University of London . But she considers her greatest award to be a job that every day allows her to walk into a classroom and teach .

As NSNA ’ s 70th Anniversary Convention ends , we reflect on the impact of the pandemic on mental health and resiliency , transition into practice , and social injustices . Most of all , we want to honor those who continue to answer the call to advocate for their patients , for nursing students , and for the nursing profession .
