STUDY

TIPS

Record yourself reading your notes or textbook and listen to the recording when you are working out , driving , or sleeping ! This way you can study anywhere you go , no matter what you are doing ! - Corey Coon , student , Mt . San Antonio College , Walnut , CA
Pre-read chapters that you know will be taught in class , so you have a better understanding of what ’ s being taught . This gives you more time to understand the content and write better notes . After class is over , re-read your notes to make sense of what was taught in class . This will help retain your knowledge . Focus on what the professor says during class . Sometimes they will say things like , “ This is important ...” That ’ s how you will know certain material will be on the exam . – Rich Lee , former NSNA member , Long Island University , Brooklyn , NY
To all the strictly visual learners out there , I see you . Since my first year in nursing school ( I am now a senior ), I have made a strong effort to stick to the one study method that I know helps me best . Within 24 hours of my class ( or sometimes even during class in the margins of my notes or on the class PowerPoint ), I create a list of questions that thoroughly adheres to my notes . I then use those questions to study , writing out my answers to each , while having my notes nearby to refer to . It may seem tedious , but it has proven itself effective exam after exam ! - Emily Williams , student , University of Virginia , Charlottesville , VA
Studying is hard ! Studying with ADHD has its own set of challenges so when someone showed me this study tip , it was life changing ! Dry Erase Boards ! Before any exam I take all the main points , things I ’ ve struggled to memorize / understand and I write it all out on my 2 giant dry erase boards ! Not only does writing out help me memorize it but with it all being in one page , there ’ s no need to flip pages or dig for information — it ’ s all right there to study ! - Reanna Britting , student , Calhoun Community College , Decatur , AL
My best study tip for anyone in a flipped classroom nursing program is to print the outlines of the professor ’ s PowerPoints ! Once you ’ ve printed the outline , go back and listen to the recorded lecture PowerPoint with the outline in hand . Next , take notes of what the professor says in the recorded lecture PowerPoint on the outline you just printed . Once you ’ re finished listening to the recorded lecture and taking notes on the outline , make flashcards of the PowerPoint using the mic feature to speak your flashcards into existence , and then bring that outline and have it out in class . Have a separate notebook to take class notes in . You will be so prepared before and after class ! - Rachael Derby , student , Georgia Gwinnett College , Loganville , GA
When I was in nursing school , my children and I went to bed at 8pm . I set my alarm for midnight so I can get up and study . All was quiet ; no phone , no TV , and the children were sleeping . I did my work and if I had time to catch some more sleep , I did . - Starr McNally , faculty advisor , Ivy Tech Community College , Logansport , IN
Rather than just passively reading the book over and over , I will close the textbook and test myself . This may mean having a family member quiz me or just trying to explain the concept from memory . Either way , this helps clarify if I really “ know ” the information , as well as highlights any gaps . - Jenn Danner , student , Lake Washington Institute of Technology , Kirkland , WA
