Resolutions : Make a Difference !

Happy New Year ! As the global community is still actively fighting against COVID-19 , I am excited about our power to influence our society with NSNA Resolutions . Resolutions allow students to learn from one another while impacting the nursing profession . By writing resolutions , nursing students have the chance to share their positions with not only fellow students , but also multiple respected healthcare organizations . Resolutions are a combination of evidence-based research and resolved statements that propose the NSNA take a stance on a specific topic in healthcare .

Nursing students from all over the country gather at the NSNA Annual Convention to utilize their critical thinking and public speaking skills to discuss the pros and cons of these proposed resolutions . This healthy debate forces us to broaden our perspectives on new topics while also professionally practicing empathy towards others ’ positions . When a resolution is passed in our House of Delegates , it serves as a basis for NSNA policy , which means that the NSNA , if feasible , will educate its constituents on the resolution topic as an article in Imprint or as a breakout session at a future NSNA Convention . In short , writing a resolution is your chance to make an impression of the future of the nursing profession ! Here are a few tips to get you started
• The first step to writing a resolution is choosing a topic about which you are passionate . The greater your interest is in promoting education or creating change , the easier it will be to explain and defend your Resolution in the House of Delegates at NSNA ’ s Annual Convention . However , before beginning the research process , ensure that your topic pertains to nursing students , nurses , or health care policy and is within the scope of the NSNA Bylaws . Also , it is essential to remember that since the NSNA is a national organization , all resolutions should be applicable to the entire country .
• Furthermore , check the NSNA website for resolutions published in the past five years before delving into research . If your topic is the same as one published in the past five years , consider changing your topic or altering it to be differentiated from the previous Resolution . You can find these past resolutions by going to the Resolutions Index by Topic tab on the NSNA website under Publications . After choosing a unique topic , you can begin finding high-quality sources from the past five years to support your Resolution .
• Be sure to carefully read the Resolutions Guidelines on the NSNA website before formatting your Resolution . These guidelines also include a downloadable template for you to follow easily at your convenience . Additionally , the Resolutions Guidelines thoroughly explain the requirements and rules of Resolutions . Be sure to read these guidelines carefully ! For instance , individual members cannot submit a resolution , but a school or state NSNA chapter can . Although multiple students can author a resolution ; there can only be one primary author , and a student cannot be the primary author for more than one Resolution .
Resolutions must be submitted online via the 2022 Resolutions Submission Form located in the Resolutions Resources tab on the NSNA website . Be sure to submit your Resolution by the deadline of January 15 , 2022 , by 5 pm Eastern Time . Within two weeks of the deadline , the Resolutions Committee will begin the reviewing and editing process . A Resolutions Committee member will reach out to you via email to correct necessary changes and briefly explain what to expect during the Resolutions Hearings and House of Delegates meetings at the Annual Convention .
