International Year of the Nurse and Midwife Extended through 2021 NSNA joins the World Health Organization ( WHO ) in extending the Year of the Nurse and Midwife into 2021 . This recognition builds on the increased visibility of nurses ’ contributions from 2020 in the fight against COVID-19 .
The WHO has declared 2021 the International Year of Nurse and Midwife to recognize the “ dedication and sacrifice ” of the millions of healthcare workers on the COVID-19 front line . This is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the work of nurses and midwives , highlight the challenging conditions they often face , and advocate for increased investments in the nursing and midwifery workforce .
The WHO designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife as a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale ’ s birth . Soon after , the world was devastatingly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic , but it truly put nurses and the nursing profession in the spotlight as they are in the frontlines of the pandemic .
