“ I would not be able to be where I am today without the mentorship of many faculty . I think that is a strong key to my leadership — trusted and reliable mentors . I have learned that I cannot do everything , and so it is important to have these key individuals near me for guidance ,” Marshall says .
Though Marshall attributes the faculty at Martin-Herold College of Nursing and Health at Mount Mercy University for his growth , he notes the many experiences outside the confines of the hospital walls that have impacted him as a student , a nurse , and a leader . Marshall serves on various student-faculty committees and has played tuba in concert bands . “ This is my fourth year of concert-band , I will truly miss it when I graduate .” It is through this balance , a mixture of work and fun , that has aptly guided Marshall .
“ Balance is vital and is so important to have a fantastic experience . You need to not only engage with your faculty and classmates in the classroom , but engage with them outside as well . Seeing your colleagues as people allows you to expand your horizons and your ability to connect with others . It lets you appreciate them as people , as they do to you , in a light that is focused on real and lasting relationships ,” Marshall explains .
Today , he has found that desired balance , with hopes of incorporating this idea in his future practice . Marshall and the IANS embrace the challenging and uncertain times in the current nursing world with one goal in mind : educating often and educating well . As a student tutor , it would certainly make sense for Marshall to inform others about pertinent health-related information . He does this through various public sectors such as the Iowa State Fair , campus , and community events .
“ In a normal year , we host a booth at the Iowa State Fair and introduce kids to nursing and health science . This year we focused on underrepresented populations in nursing : men in nursing , indigenous people , people of color , and other minority populations ,” Marshall says . This push focuses on celebrating diversity in nursing and highlights each member ’ s contribution to the profession ,” Marshall explains . Also , he aspires to focus on Emotional Wellness amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic . Marshall explains this campaign will emphasize the permissibility of not being okay . As student nurses , we have seen , we have heard — we have been there alongside this pandemic .
“ It is not a secret we are struggling with . We can learn to struggle together , out loud versus facing the stress in silence and alone ,” Marshall urges .
Through the many raised hands as a nursing tutor , running around the simulation lab as a simulation assistant , and braving the mornings as a summer intern on a cardiac telemetry floor , Marshall is determined to venture bravely into the nursing profession . His time at Mount Mercy — yes , even if initially accidental and surely stressful — has helped Marshall find balance , a balance he will share with patients to come . n
Marshall is a current member of the 2021 NSNA Resolution Committee .
