The most important part of studying is getting enough sleep ( that means 7-8 hours per night ) and healthy eating . If your brain isn ’ t rested or doesn ’ t have adequate nutrients from your diet , it cannot process information . That would be like pouring water in a bowl that ’ s already overflowing . You ’ re spilling out as much as you ’ re putting in . So , take care of yourself !

After lectures , I like to create what I call “ PowerPoint on a page .” This study tip helps me quickly go over the lecture content and reinforce major concepts the professor emphasized . I use a pen , a couple highlighters , and my imagination to bring the whole PowerPoint to life on one page . It ’ s like a mind map that I can quickly use to quiz myself before exams as well ! To study the in-depth information , I walk around the indoor track or anywhere on campus , as a friend and I talk through lecture content with our notes in hand .

Teaching others is a great way to study . If you do not have anyone to teach , you can pretend to teach your stuffed animals .

I get distracted very easily by my environment when I am trying to read or study . Since beginning my nursing school journey , I have been using an app that plays sounds that mimics the environment of a busy coffee shop . With my headphones in , it blocks out most noises or conversations going on in my environment and helps me to maintain focus .

Nursing school is all consuming ; physically and emotionally . We are human first , and nursing student second . It is important to take the time to invest in yourself emotionally so you can succeed in school ! Whether that is individual therapy , journaling , a support group , mentorship program , or a hobby . We are special , drawn to this profession to help , but if we do not help ourselves first , we cannot reach our full helping potential ! Be well friends !

Keeping a healthy lifestyle is hard as a nursing student . We have so much to do and so much to learn ! To keep my activity level up while keeping my grades up , I re-listen to lectures while walking on a treadmill , riding a stationary bike , or doing an easy-to-follow at-home workout ( with the workout volume very low ). If I have printed notes or flash cards , I read those on a stationary bike , too . Studies show that exercise is good for the brain and can help enhance memory . So why not listen and learn while exercising ?!
