Congratulations to the September 2020 BTN Monthly Award Winner ! Salisbury University , Salisbury , MD For the September 2020 theme , “ Breaking the Stigma : STD / STI ,” Salisbury University SNA was very excited to share their knowledge about Sexual Transmitted Diseases and Infections . They educated students on STD / STI stigmas , common myths , and the truth about STD misconceptions . To capture students ’ attention , they created a neon green sign which listed different myths lined up with another statement on the poster to make it true .
Congratulations to Breakthrough to Nursing Monthly Award October 2020 Winner : Fayetteville Technical Community College , Fayetteville , NC For the October 2020 Maternity Health theme , Fayette Technical Community College ’ s SNA school chapter sewed weighted comfort bears for bereaved mothers who have just lost a child ( in utero , stillborn , or shortly after birth ). They removed the stuffing from teddy bears and replace it with rice . The bear serves as a comforting item during the grieving process . Mothers report putting the bear in family pictures in memory of their lost child . The project also sews sibling bears for the siblings of the child lost . These are small , stuffed patterned bears hand-sewn by the school chapter . Siblings are often overlooked when grieving a lost child and this gives the hospital staff an item to offer the siblings during a difficult time . In addition , the school chapter sews therapy dolls ( miniature stuffed human figures ) used by the child life specialist to teach children about upcoming procedures . The sewing project began when a close friend of an NSNA member was gifted a weighted bunny after the birth of her stillborn child . The bunny attended all family events in memory of the child and made a special difference . Over time , this sewing project has expanded to meet the needs of the hospital and the community !
