Inside the concentration camps there was a system of numbers that were used to identify prisoners. Prisoners only got tattoos if they were chosen for work. Those who were sent straight to the gas chamber were not given a number at all. Each prisoner got a number, and that was what they were reffered to. The prisoners no longer had names.

These numbers were also sewn onto their clothes. The prisoners were not given any anesthetic for the pain. The numbers were just put into their arms. After the war, the tattoo stayed on for most people. It was a constant reminder of what had happened to them and their past.
