Honoring Local Veterans

Celebrated on the last Monday in May and annually on November 11 , respectively , Memorial Day and Veterans Day pay homage to the men and women that fought for their country , and while these federal holidays are recognized on the calendar , the citizens of Live Oak wanted to do something more to show their appreciation and in 2021 formed Crosses for Our Community , which honors veterans with personalized cross and flag bundles positioned along Highway 129 South .

“ What it is , is an opportunity for us to recognize all veterans in our community and surrounding communities by displaying a cross and a flag . The crosses that have a black band at the top of them are the deceased veterans , those are called mourning bands , but more importantly , to me , it was to bring educational purpose – informational purposes – for our school children and to others in our community that may not know the importance of the men and women that fought for our freedoms ,” said Buddy Williams , who was one of the founding committee members .
