“At Haggai Institute, there took place a deep emotional, spiritual, and character transformation.” When he left the MPC, he was in no doubt as to what God had called him to do. “I have looked at the world differently since. It confirmed to me that the passion and zeal I had to work within the marketplace was ordained of God. A major shift took place in my theology and in my thinking.” Since then, Clive has trained more than 1,000 leaders in evangelism – through National Leadership of Youth Conferences, Haggai Institute’s Alumni Association, and the African Enterprise Leadership Training Centre. He finds the training itself acts as a passport. He says, “It has made me more accomplished and more respected as a Christian trainer and mentor. When leaders discover I have been trained at Haggai Institute and was later invited to be a faculty member, my credibility increases, and this opens further doors for training and ministry.” In 2011 alone, Clive was able to reach more than 40,000 youth with the Gospel through an evangelism program. Last year he passed on his leadership of that program to a mentee who has now become a Haggai Institute alumnus. His goals for his city – “vibrant, prosperous, God-acknowledging, clean, safe” – rest on his commitment to focus his efforts in the marketplace. He works with the Pietermaritzburg Business Improvement District, teaching for the business department at Varsity College, and providing leadership training for local organizations. For Clive, the marketplace itself is a mission field. “Haggai Institute confirmed what I had surmised over the years – that I need to be extending God’s Kingdom – that I need to take the Gospel to where the people are, rather than trying to coax them into the churches first.” “At Haggai Institute, there took place a deep emotional, spiritual, and character transformation.” Youth remain a major focus for Clive. “Wherever I am, I talk to leaders about the need to transfer our knowledge of God to the next generation. We don’t want to raise a generation who doesn’t know God.” He nods, reflecting on this priority. “This,” he affirms, “is what God has called me to do.” S tory by Heather Loveridge Photography by Tres Rice The school where Clive teaches considers it crucial that their students are exposed to strong leadership values. With the median age of the population in South Africa at 25, young people will have great influence on their country. 7
