REGAINING MOMENTUM - WINTER 2022
On December 20 , 2021 , Investigator ( Inv ) Whitfield and Special Agent ( SA ) Platts were traveling near Burke County when they noticed a vehicle on fire . There were no other law enforcement agencies at the scene yet , and the fire was quickly developing ; therefore , they decided to activate their blue lights . Seconds later , we observed a gentleman exit the burning vehicle with severe head / facial injuries . Inv Whitfield immediately grabbed the fire extinguisher and headed to the vehicle to assist in putting out the fire and to see if the vehicle had any additional occupants . With the help of bystanders , four occupants exited the vehicle , which included the father , mother , and two small children . Once deputies from the Burke County Sheriff ’ s Office arrived , Inv Whitfield and SA Platts assisted in controlling the scene and directing traffic . SA Platts spoke with witnesses on the scene to gather information for the investigating agency . At the same time , Inv Whitfield assisted EMS aid the other occupants as they were taken to the local hospitals via ambulance and helicopter to treat their injuries .
We appreciate SA Platts and Inv Whitfield and for their courageous and selfless efforts to assist a family in their time of need . Their bravery in the face of danger was remarkable and we are proud to have them on the GDC team .
