Evidence-Based Programming Supports Successful Reentry
The Risk Reduction Unit is a program within the GDC whose mission is to reduce recidivism by providing research-based programs . The unit offers mandated programs that implement evidence-based programs targeting crime-producing behavior while focusing on criminal thinking and behavior .
During FY21 , the agency implemented various curricular and assessments to identify an offender ’ s risk and needs to provide the appropriate programming options effectively . The Unit provided offenders with 10,041 job leads prior to their release , referred 13,692 offenders to employers that provide job training , provided 1,277 offenders with resumes , and gave 305 job fair referrals . The GDC partnered with federal , state , and county agencies and non-profit and communitybased organizations to ensure offenders ’ programming needs were met .

The Georgia Department of Corrections ( GDC ) Risk Reduction Unit provides evidence-based programming to offenders throughout the state . The Risk Reduction Unit has steadily increased its completions , and despite the challenges of fiscal year 2021 ( FY21 ) ( July 1 , 2020- June 30 , 2021 ), the unit had 33,747 enrollments and 24,992 completions . Program completion certificates demonstrate effective offender intervention in criminal thinking , substance abuse , education , and employment .
