The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) took the proactive steps to ensure the safety of the public, our staff, and the offenders in our custody, as Georgia prepared to respond to Hurricane Dorian.
In accordance with Governor Kemp's mandatory evacuation order for coastal Georgia, 1,670 offenders housed at Coastal state Prison, and 260 Coastal Transitional Center residents were evacuated as of 11:30 a.m., September 3. On September 7, at 2:30 p.m., it was reported that all 1,930 offenders were safely back in those facilities.
"I am proud of the GDC team who worked selflessly to ensure these offenders were kept out of harm's way," said GDC Commissioner, Timothy C. Ward. "Our commitment to the safety of the public, our staff, and offenders remains steadfast, regardless of the situation."
