GDC Mother’s Room
As a new mother, it’s hard to come back to work and leave your little one at
home. There are the fears and anxieties of how someone else can take care
of your baby, as good as you, and those will never leave your mind. On top
of that, you still need to care for your family by paying bills and staying
at home isn’t an option. Not many things can help these thoughts but
coming to a workplace that puts mother’s first helps to ease the stress
and is a comfort to a new mom. Thankfully, the Georgia Department of
Corrections’ facilities are opening up lactation stations, and it is changing
the way new moms work.
Commissioner Timothy C. Ward’s Wellness Initiative has brought many
health-related goals to the GDC but having lactation rooms at every facility
has been at the forefront for breastfeeding mothers. Andrea Wilson, an
employee at Lee Arrendale State Prison says, “I am so very thankful for the
Mother’s Room at LASP. As a nursing mom, it is helpful to have a dedicated,
private space to pump. Juggling a full-time job and being a nursing mother takes
a considerable amount of energy and dedication so having the Mother’s Room just
makes my day easier.”
The GDC works hard to help new mothers feel comfortable as they transition back to work after maternity
leave. The rooms offer privacy and comfort as moms need a quick break to pump and store milk, for her baby.
Facilities across the state are opening up lactation rooms for all breastfeeding mothers in order to make their
journeys as easy and accommodating as possible.
At the GDC’s headquarters, a lactation room has
officially opened in Robert’s Chapel. The new
“Mother’s Room” is completely renovated, has
cozy furniture and plenty of books to keep moms
entertained, while pumping. The room even has
a fridge for milk storage, and a sink to clean their
supplies. The Mother’s Room is located on the first
floor of Robert’s Chapel; it is on the left side of the
building right in front of the conference room.
This room is available to any and all breastfeeding
mothers. Employees can use their security badge
to access the room and visitors will need to obtain a
key from the HR offices located on the second floor
of Gibson Hall.

The Georgia Department of Corrections is in full support of
breastfeeding mothers. The GDC Head Quarters just opened
this “Mother’s Room” for any employee and/or visitor on
campus to use while breastfeeding. The room offers comfort, a
fridge for storage and a sanitation area. All GDC facilities across
the state will soon offer a lactation station for mothers to use!
